14/2/2007 - Adrian
I was taking my girlfriend away for a week over valentine’s week to the Canary Islands. I also wanted to do some Big game fishing or deep sea fishing for Marlin, Swordfish, Giant blue fin Tuna or many other big game fish.
I looked on the internet and found only a couple of sites.
I decided to go to the docks upon arrival in Tenerife to try to see the boats and the captains. I was staying close to Playa de las Americas near Puerto Colon.
I talked to a couple of the captains and was not impressed with the amount of passengers or the equipment.
I then met Leo from Sailfisher down at the dock showing one of his regular charters his other larger boat Soulfisher. The gentleman assured me I could not want for a better captain or boat in Tenerife. “It holds the Marlin records for Tenerife 3 out of 4 the last years” he told me. Leo showed me his scrapbook this was proof enough for me that this was no tourist con it was a reputable and professional company.
I chose to go on the next available charter. Unfortunately this was on St Valentine’s Day much to my girlfriend’s annoyance.
After spending half an hour on Sailfisher talking to Leo and his able assistant it confirmed what I had bee told. These guys really knew their stuff. We left Puerto Colon at 4pm as the Giant Blue fin Tuna were not feeding till at least 6pm and planned to fish for 4 hours or till it got dark when the fish would stop feeding. The weather was cloudy and overcast which was good for the fishing.
We spent the first hour fishing for the bate which we caught lots of, this set us up nicely for the rest of the night. We were plagued by dolphins for a while which hampered us but we could not do anything about. We then monitored the gauges looking for the all important different coloured mars on the fish finders. We saw lots of bonito as well as blue fin but at depth not feeding.
We soon found some near the surface and proceeded to get the rods baited and in the water. Then I heard the delightful whir as the Giant Blue fin took my bait. I struck hard and then had an intense fight of about 15 minuets as I played the fish. As their web site says we hook them we land them and we did. The resulting fish was a 22-25 kilogram Giant Blue fin Tuna. It may have been a baby according to Leo but it was well worth the money.I have done big game fishing in America, Africa, Australia, Thailand and around Europe.
I found Leo and Sailfisher in my opinion one of the best, if not the best and most reasonably priced charters I have had the pleasure of going on. Hence to say I have booked a charter for June when I have decided to return to Tenerife.
My girlfriend even forgave me for going on valentines day!
